Fresh sentence for jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi

Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate currently in prison in Iran, has been sentenced to a further 15 months for "propaganda against the system", her relatives said on Monday. 

A revolutionary court had in addition issued an order preventing her from travelling abroad, being a member of a political group or using a smartphone for two years, they posted on her Instagram account, which is managed by her supporters outside Iran. 

Mohammadi, 51, received the Peace Prize "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all", according to the citation. 

She is currently serving a lengthy sentence in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison. According to her relatives and supporters, Mohammadi has been found guilty by the Iranian courts five times since 2021. Her sentences include 12 years and three months in prison plus 154 lashes.

According to the Nobel Prize Committee, she has been detained 13 times and sentenced to a total of 31 years. Mohammadi, who has a degree in physics, is a staunch opponent of the death penalty in a country where it is frequently handed down and carried out.    (dpa)
